There’s a malaise in Australia today, for all that this is (still) a wonderful, largely free and prosperous country.
Far too many people are bored with what they have. They’re shockingly ungrateful for the achievements and sacrifices of the men and women who founded, built and defended this country. They don’t value our democratic freedoms, because they’ve never known life without them. They take little interest in the history of their own country and little in world history – so they have little perspective to appreciate the tremendous privilege it is to live in this magnificent country. The problem is most acute in the younger generations because the education system has been seriously infiltrated by the corrosive and destructive ideas of Cultural Marxism.
Many of these people are preoccupied with short-term gratifications, have a short attention span, and are obsessed with self. They’re keen to take the benefit of endless rights but not so keen on responsibilities.
Another, especially pernicious group are into the mental delusion of Cultural Pessimism – a preparedness to badmouth Western civilization in general as a dreary story of racism, xenophobia, colonialism and imperialism, “fascist” nationalism, sexism, homophobia and “religious bigotry”. They peddle Western (and Australian) self-hatred, a permanent mindset of “white guilt” reflected in a “black armband” view of our history. They denigrate and seek to pull down the priceless achievements of Western civilization. They peddle their views with an affected moral superiority and seek to enforce them through Political Correctness. These ingrates are traitors to the society which nurtured them and gave them unparalleled advantages in life.
Catherine Deveny, Melbourne writer and unfunny humourist, tweeted in 2010:
“ANZAC DAY. Men only enlisted to fight for the money, for the adventure or because they were racist. I abhor people whose self-esteem is fuelled by nationalism, approved misogyny, homophobia, racism or cruelty administered by relos …
“Stop feeling big because your dead relative killed people because they knew no better. … Anzac Day: F–k respect. Respect is just code for “support our selective narrative used to prop up our power that we use to oppress.”
“An AUSTRALIAN FLAG in your front yard tells everyone you’re only a couple of Bundy and Cokes away from lynching a wog, slope or Arab.”
– Quoted in The Australian, 5 September 2012, p. 15
These statements are straight out of Cultural Marxism.
Consider the typical white “progressive” who denounces the historical European colonization of foreign lands as imperialistic and oppressive – yet celebrates the current foreign colonization of Europe AND wants this to be replicated in Australia. This is a will to cultural suicide.
We live in one of the most free and materially privileged countries ever – yet there’s so much nihilism about. Ingratitude, lostness.
Within our country, “progressives” besotted with the Politically Correct ideology of multiculturalism assert that all cultures are equal. In fact though, as the American writer Thomas Sowell has written:
What multiculturalism boils down to is that you can praise any culture in the world except Western culture – and you cannot blame any culture in the world except Western culture.
In her autobiographical book ‘Nomad” (2010), Ayaan Hirsi Ali, ex-Somalian Dutch politician and current Fellow at Harvard University writes:
“Here is something I have learned the hard way, but which a lot of well-meaning people in the West have a hard time accepting: ALL HUMAN BEINGS ARE EQUAL, BUT ALL CULTURES AND RELIGIONS ARE NOT. A culture that celebrates femininity and considers women to be the masters of their own lives is better than a culture that mutilates girls’ genitals and confines them behind walls and veils or flogs or stones them for falling in love. A culture that protects women’s rights by law is better than a culture in which a man can lawfully have four wives at once and women are denied alimony and half their inheritance. A culture that appoints women to its supreme court is better than a culture that declares that the testimony of a woman is worth half that of a man. It is part of Muslim culture to oppress women and part of all tribal cultures to institutionalize patronage, nepotism, and corruption. The culture of the Western Enlightenment is BETTER.”
Everyone who has been through a university since 1965 has been exposed to, and likely infected by, these ideas:
- denial of absolute truth;
- denial of absolute standards;
- cultural, religious and moral relativism;
- nihilism ;
- ’tolerant’ non-judgmentalism.
These attitudes are profoundly corrosive of culture and of life force in our nation.
Culture is shared beliefs, shared understandings, shared observances, and shared values. Unreflective “progressives” are noisily destroying all of these. But how can a society survive when its guts have been torn out?
The Freedom and Heritage Society of Australia unashamedly affirms Australia’s Judeo-Christian and Enlightenment heritage of values, common law and democratic institutions inherited from Britain, the Australian Constitution, our national independence free of supra-national interference, and the traditional family as the bedrock institution of our society.
Christian foundations underpin democracy and freedom, especially in the family of English speaking nations, but more generally in all democracies, and where truth and liberty live.
“Our real problems today are not economic problems. Nor are they political problems. Our real problems have to do with values, with character, with morality. A country can survive a current account deficit, but it cannot for long survive a value deficit. And the first place to begin in restoring this value deficit is to reaffirm character, integrity and morality, both private and public.” – Bill Muehlenberg
